Materialistic Approach to Lifestyle

Materialistic Approach to Lifestyle

The philosophy of materialism, often known as physicalism, holds that all facts, including those about the human intellect, volition, and the path of human history, are causally dependent upon or even reducible to physical processes.

The importance that focusing on material items is known as materialism. Any item, including clothing, footwear, handbags, automobiles, electronics, and gadgets, could be considered one of these possessions. Such as: buying new shoes to make themselves appear taller to others.

A group of personality characteristics is referred to as materialism. There are a lot of materialistic people in the modern world. They think acquiring and owning the correct properties are essential components of pleasure. These individuals believe that success is determined by the possessions one acquires.

Philosophers and theologians have long complained about the idea that materialism is incompatible with a moral life. More frequently than not, the pursuit of worldly wealth is seen as hollow, which stops one from participating in daily activities.

The failure to achieve a level of happiness in one’s life is a result of living a materialistic lifestyle. The empirical research on the relationship between materialism and happiness has found a negative association between the two persons.

Being materialistic is harmful because it causes a world of differences in how individuals interact with one another. Materialistic people rarely treat others as equals and frequently go above and above to flaunt their money.

They seldom care about anyone outside themselves and routinely take advantage of and mistreat people in a dog-eat-dog society. People should consequently adhere to the Bible’s precepts and develop morals. Sharing the small things, we have with the less fortunate would promote equality in society. Materialism generates corruption and results in social injustice.

Materialistic people will resort to any methods necessary to keep the rest of society in poverty. In third-world nations, where leaders are motivated by greed and hence pilfer public monies to retain their standing, materialism is more evident.

Causes to become materialistic:

Understanding the root causes of your potential materialism is crucial for coming up with a remedy. Many people appear to define their social standing by having designer clothing, a new automobile, or the newest phone.

The temptation to compare yourself to others has nearly become inevitable with the current practice of having accounts on several social media platforms, such as Instagram, Snapchat, and Facebook. This could cause you to become more materialistic and base your identity on the things you use and own.

Although it’s acceptable to have certain possessions and take pride in them, defining your identity by them or obtaining them to “compete” with the individuals you see on your social media feeds can have a detrimental effect on your mental health. Here some causes are highlighted below:

Being less empathic and more competitive, manipulative, and selfish toward others are all characteristics of materialism. materialism is linked to lower levels of happiness, fewer pro-social interpersonal interactions, more ecologically harmful conduct, and poorer academic performance. Additionally, it is linked to increased debt and spending issues.

We discovered that the more strongly people endorsed economic ideals, the more they reported physical health issues like headaches and stomachaches, the more they experienced negative emotions like depression and anxiety, and the less they felt happy and content with their life.

Insecure people tend to become more materialistic:

According to research, there are two groups of elements that influence people’s materialistic values. First off, when exposed to messages that value such pursuits, people become more materialistic. Second, and maybe less obviously, people are more materialistic when they feel threatened or uncomfortable, whether as a result of rejection, financial worries, or self-destructive impulses.

To overcome materialism:

Using what you buy and only purchasing items that you genuinely need are two straightforward principles to follow. You should consider the worth of money when shopping. Consider how many hours you worked to get the money you are going to spend, for instance, or how you might be able to use it for bigger investments if you work (ex: education, vacations).

You must alter your self-perception and realize the value of your mental well-being to defeat materialism. Psychologists have discovered that there is no correlation between materialistic desires and happiness, except for extreme poverty. Your identity and happiness are not determined by your possessions. Instead, the foundation of who you are is built on your actions, objectives, and interactions with other people. Instead of being driven to improve your public image, it is crucial to concentrate on your objectives, journey, and experiences.

Simplify all you own to avoid letting it drain your mental energy. Even though it is less glamorous, simplicity requires less upkeep, offers fewer diversions, and demands less thought. You can direct your energies toward your inner world if you live simply.

Consider your morals and comprehension when evaluating oneself. Instead of having the reverse, I’d be much better with myself if I was impoverished but had a solid understanding of the world and followed an ethics code. Don’t put your sense of value on your accomplishments or the respect of your peers.

Use the money to free yourself, not to enslave you. Don’t just adjust by upping your standard of living after you have a higher salary. Instead, attempt to put some distance between your salary and standard of living so that you may live within your means. You will have greater freedom to pursue objectives and concepts that might not boost your productivity right away as a result of this.

It cannot be brought with you. What will be significant to you as you approach death? When you reflect on your entire life, what stood out? To set priorities, use that.
