Tech Meets Tradition: The Untold Story of SQUIRE’s Entrepreneurial Triumph

Tech Meets Tradition: The Untold Story of SQUIRE’s Entrepreneurial Triumph

Beyond Haircuts: How SQUIRE Transformed Barbershops Worldwide

Ever wondered what makes entrepreneurial journeys so awe-inspiring?

Maybe it’s the sheer determination, the ability to spot a golden opportunity, or the audacity to dive into the unknown, banking on an idea against all odds.

But what if the magic lies in knowing that every entrepreneur has a humble beginning?

Just an idea, the passion to pursue it, and the essential entrepreneurial skills to turn it into reality.

Could their success be a beacon, signaling that you, too, can follow suit, armed with the right skills and mindset?

Hi, I’m Nabeel Shaikh, a seasoned chartered accountant and an entrepreneur. Whether you’re an aspiring entrepreneur seeking motivation or someone nurturing the seed of an innovative idea, let’s delve into a tech startup success story that holds valuable lessons.

The Barbershop Visionaries: Songe LaRon and Dave Salvant

Meet Songe LaRon and Dave Salvant, familiar faces in the vibrant world of New York City barbershops.

Having frequented these bustling hubs since the tender age of six, the duo, with backgrounds in banking and law, felt the entrepreneurial calling.

What stimulated their interest was the lifeless state of the barbershop experience.

In their own words, Salvant reflects, “The process hasn’t changed since I was a little boy.”

The routine involved a call or text to your barber, hours of waiting in the shop, and a cash payment—while in the same era, you could summon a rideshare from your phone.

It begged the question, “Why hasn’t this changed?”

Enter the roots of Squire, a revolutionary barbershop point-of-sales and management system. LaRon and Salvant envisioned more than just a customer-facing app for booking appointments; they aimed to create “the Uber of barbers.”

Spotting the Unseen Opportunity

In the words of Songe LaRon from the enlightening journey of Launching Tech Ventures, “There’s an opportunity here that everyone else is missing for whatever reason.”

LaRon believed that there were certain blind spots in the vision of both investors and fellow entrepreneurs, a realm of potential left unexplored.

And they were determined to bridge that gap.

Confident in their advantage and rooted in an intimate understanding of the barbershop industry, LaRon and Salvant embarked on a mission to validate their intuition.

Their strategy?

Door-to-door interactions, seeking feedback from barbers who, in the midst of their busy schedules, often barely spared a moment to glance at the product, let alone engage in in-depth conversations.

The challenge was real, but so was their conviction.

Turning Chance into Triumph: The WeWork Encounter

In a coincidental turn of events, LaRon and Salvant found themselves in a WeWork, where destiny introduced them to a group of executives.

With a spark of entrepreneurial enthusiasm, they seized the opportunity to pitch their brainchild—Squire. It was a gamble, and it paid off.

One executive, captivated by their vision, took that leap of faith and provided the crucial seed funding.

With this financial boost, they swiftly hired a developer and birthed the first version of the Squire app.

To put Squire to the test and gather immediate insights, LaRon and Salvant set up a pop-up barbershop right in their WeWork haven.

The result?

A revelation.

The app efficiently tackled the very issues they, as customers, had endured—streamlining scheduling and payment. But there was a hitch: it didn’t quite align with the needs of the barbers themselves.

A Bold Gamble: Immersing Themselves in the Barber’s ChairMobile screen showing Squire barbershops app

In 2016, the entrepreneurial duo, unwilling to settle for mediocrity, made a pivotal decision.

In a true “bet-the-company” move, LaRon and Salvant purchased a barbershop.

This wasn’t just a financial investment; it was an immersive plunge into the intricacies of the industry they aimed to revolutionize. And it came at a cost—over half of their hard-earned funds.

But, as with any gamble, there’s an element of risk and reward.

In this case, the risk was substantial, but the payoff was monumental.  By owning and operating a barbershop, they gained firsthand insights into the nuanced challenges of running such establishments.

From juggling bookings to navigating the complexities of compensating individual barbers, they absorbed the essence of the barber’s world. This hands-on experience would prove to be the catalyst for refining and reshaping Squire into the solution the industry truly needed.

Navigating the Entrepreneurial Pivot: From B2C to B2B Mastery

In a strategic shift that would reshape their trajectory, LaRon and Salvant made a pivotal decision.

They deviate away from targeting end consumers, following the B2C model, and set their sights on barbershop owners—a shift to the B2B approach.

This transformation, as Harvard Business School Senior Lecturer Jeffrey Bussgang points out, marked a crucial juncture in their journey.

According to Bussgang, who imparts wisdom in Launching Tech Ventures, the focus is to treat barbershop owners as the primary clientele. The duo, fueled by this shift, embarked on crafting a Software as a Service (SaaS) platform tailored to meet the specific needs of these business owners.

While their initial foray into the consumer market might be seen as a detour, it served as a vital lesson in honing their customer value proposition—a lesson that would prove invaluable in the evolution of their venture.

From Evolution to Triumph: Squire’s Soaring Success

With the launch of their revamped platform, Squire skyrocketed to success.

Today, the groundbreaking solution spans across three countries, a testament to its global impact.

The financial backing tells an equally impressive tale—Squire has secured a staggering $165 million in funding, solidifying its status as a tech powerhouse.

Cumulatively, Squire has attracted over $167 million in funding, drawing support from notable investors such as Iconiq, CRV, Trinity Ventures, and 645 Ventures.
